Of course I'm going to have to start things off with the CAL Berkeley Bears. Good golly that was a major league butt-whoopin they put on Wazzou. The Cougs probably still don't know exactly what hit them. It all had something to do with 14 carries, 200 yards, and 3 touchdowns for Jahvid Best. That includes two TD runs for 80-yards or more. And what more can be said about Syd'Quan Thompson. Throw in the still-reliable play of Kevin Riley and you know what? The Golden Bears are one very tough out. Best of luck in College Park, Twerps. You're going to need it.
What stood out for me is how the Buckeyes struggled against the Ohio Bobcats at the Horseshoe a week prior to their much-anticipated showdown against the Trojans. I think USC is licking their chops for what should be a blowout. I could be wrong, but I'm giving Pete Carroll and USC the points and more for their game with OSU.
The BYU / Washington game was ridiculous. Of course, the replay showed that the Huskies QB threw the ball high in the air when he scored the touchdown to bring UW within a point of tying the game. And did the 15-yard penalty on the point-after cost Washington the ballgame, or was it when that kick was actually blocked that the game was over? Special teams was truly the difference. Wasn't it BYU that defeated UCLA last year in the bowl game on a last second blocked kick? Well, the Bruins will get their revenge this weekend when they face BYU. That should definitely be one to watch!
Texas and Oklahoma are running roughshod over the competition thus far. Their annual clash is starting to shape up to be the next "big" game in college football this year after USC/OSU, in my opinion. At this point, am I wrong to suggest that the Sooners seem to have a slight edge? It's hard to say, but they've scored 104-points in two games. Granted, inferior opposition, but 104-points is 104-points!
I give the Idaho Vandals credit for rebounding after a 70-0 thrashing to the Arizona Wildcats as they defeated Idaho State last weekend. Whew!
NFL
This is my 8th or 9th year in the Bay Cities Fantasy Football League, comprised of my longtime college buddies, co-workers, and best friends: Derrick, John, Mike, Andrew, Kelvin, Shane, Greg, Ken, and Chris from Houston. My team is known as the Patriots and we dropped our first game of the season (89-67) to Mike's Allie-Gators. Hopefully I can scrape together a victory in Week 2.
My Week 1 line-up included:
Ben Roethlisberger and David Garrard, Joseph Addai and Laurence Maroney, Nate Burleson, Santonio Holmes, and Marques Colston, Todd Heap, David Akers, and the Colts DST.
It's a decent group of guys, but just down weeks and I missed out on a pre-season pick-up, Hank Baskett, whose 90-yard TD reception and 30-points would have propelled me to victory.
Up next is Andrew's Megatons. Only the highest-scoring team in the league last weekend. Great!
Around the actual NFL, I was most surprised by Tom Brady's injury. I doubt Matt Cassell will be the "answer" in New England. That team is now in some serious jeopardy.
The Panthers last second, 26-24 victory over San Diego was amazing, considering QB Jake Delhomme is coming back from Tommy John surgery!
The Bears dismantling of the Colts on Sunday night was equally impressive. Their game plan and defense rose to the occasion and they handled their business.
The Raiders are still the Raiders. One of my fifth graders asked me if I watched the game last night. He goes, "I woke up in the 3rd quarter and it was 27-0. I fell right back asleep." Hilarious.
The Niners are also ... sadly ... still the Niners. So maybe THAT is why J.T. O'Sullivan has traveled the country like freaking Lewis and Clark the past couple of years. Yikes.
I watched Brett Favre's performance in Miami. He still has "it" but the Jets definitely aren't going to run away with anything.
The strongest performances of Week 1 were the Eagles, and particularly Donovan McNabb; the Falcons combo of Matt Ryan and Michael Turner; and the Steelers.
We'll have to see how things unfold in Week 2.
