So this morning I was driving to summer school when I turned on the radio and heard that the DJ, Marla, was having diaper issues at home with her 5-year old. Apparently he's still wearing overnight diapers and she admitted that they were taking a more lackadaisical approach to dealing with it. It was a funny conversation and they appealed to the audience for help. So I quickly dialed their number and wouldn't ya know it? Bill, her partner, picked up the phone and just like that - snap! - I was on the air.
First of all, I had to begin by saying there was definitely a "right way" and a "wrong way" to change diapers. And no, I did not use air quotes as I paced in front of my car in the Walgreen's parking lot. Yes, I know - big dork, nevertheless.
You know the right and wrong way of course: her way is the right way and my way is the wrong way. I facetiously said that I put the diapers on backwards. Bill and Marla asked if that was my job at the house, and I said it's one of them, though I remember hearing once someone (Jeff Foxworthy) said that while men do about 10% of the housework, they're more proud of their 10% than women are of their 90%. We all laughed.
Bill asked me if I had any advice for Marla who's 5-year old was still in diapers. "Wow!" I said. "Five years old?!?!" Then I had to figure a way out of that one and so I go, "Well, I'm the guy who's putting diapers on backwards. I doubt I'm the right guy to ask for advice." And that was that.
It was a fun moment, and I was laughing on the rest of the way to work that I wound up on the radio so quickly. No screener or anything. Just dialed and I was on. But beyond that, upon further reflection, my answer did help me realize how grateful I am that Kari is so well-prepared and efficient as a mother. She is aware of all the little things that are so important when it comes to raising a child. I appreciate her skills and recognize how deficient I am in keeping up with her most days, and she's 9 months pregnant.
Anyhow, tune in tomorrow. You never know who you'll hear on the radio!
