So much for Alexander Pope and "Hope springs eternal..." 2009 for the Oakland Athletics has become a lost cause. We don't have Eric Chavez and his career looks to be done with his nagging back injuries and surgery. Jason Giambi was a joke, putting up dismal numbers and ultimately being dealt to Colorado on his own bobblehead doll night last Friday. Rather ironic, I'd say. Matt Holliday didn't even last a season. Neither did Orlando Cabrera.
The worst of it all is in our pitching corps. Andrew Bailey was selected to the All-Star Game as the only representative from the Athletics. He wasn't on the active roster exiting Spring Training. Nearly every other picher we have was somehow dealt or demoted.
It just was not meant to be. Quite frankly, I'm all right with that. So, who will I pull for down the stretch? I figured that out already!
You'll recall that earlier this season, the A's faced a rookie pitcher Nick Adenhart down in Anaheim. He performed very well, but the A's actually won the game.
The next morning, on the news, a tragic story came out in the aftermath of that game. Apparently, later that night, on his way home with some friends after making his major league debut, the vehicle Adenhart was riding in was broadsided, killing him in the collision.
It was a devastating blow to baseball fans around the country. In fact, it made it all the way into my classroom where many of my students were talking about the accident and how sad it was. In fact, they were so moved, they asked if they could make cards to send to the Adenhart family and the Angels organization.
So, as much as I do NOT like the Angels, being a diehard A's fan, I plan to root them on to win it all this year, in honor of the late Nick Adenhart.
Meanwhile, if the A's would PLEASE figure out a way to get a healthy crop next year and get back into contention, that would be great. It wasn't just 2006 that we were in the League Championship Series! We can do it, Oakland!
