April 28, 1994

4/28 -

Service was fun. I really have a connection with Mrs. Strobel. She's cool!

We visited Misti Cox and get her to actually to (a) call home. I cannot yet realize the full import of what happened. But I hope she goes. I would die. She is so awesome and her family misses her, I'm sure.

And we showed Jean Graham/Denise (b) 'TF' and they seemed to enjoy it, but they don't seem to want to progress.

And we taught a great first off of tracting to Liz Lopez. She even committed to baptism! We'll teach her with he Span-Ams on Saturday. She is awesome.

(c) Phone tracting was very hurried before we went to a productive (d) corr. meeting w/ Bro. Cucci.

Sleeping over back in Bethlehem (!) with the (e) ZL's so we can go to a (f) bapt. int. tomorrow for their (g) 'gator, Ellis Douglas.

Called Penny. No (h) coffee still! She is fantastic!

**********************************

(a) I am not quite sure what the story with Misti Cox and her home situation was. (Or my grammar in that first sentence.) In any event, she must have been away from her family for some time with this whole decision to call home. I am just as curious as anyone reading this to know what happens. The name does not stand out in my mind for any particular reason, so who knows?

(b) TF stands for the name of an LDS Church video entitled Together Forever. The video describes Heavenly Father's plan for families to be together for eternity. We would show this to investigators and/or members.

(c) Phone tracting is a strategy that was implemented by our Mission President Morley. He asked us to pick a page from the phone book, cold call, and we would introduce ourselves as missionaries from the LDS Church and ask if we could visit to share our message with them. This required an extraordinary amount of faith, and 20 years later, I cannot comprehend how effective a program like this would work in our day and age. It was not much better in 1994, though I do have one very successful story that will come up when I was serving in New Jersey with a family named Ed and Linda Shim. Largely this program never got off the ground, but we did it faithfully every day. It was something like 20 phone contacts a day.

(d) Corr. meeting is short for Ward Correlation Meeting which takes place on a weekly basis, typically at church. Each ward has called a person to be the Ward Mission Leader and several members are called to be Ward Missionaries. They team up with the full-time missionaries to split up and attend appointments or do other service or less-active visits during the week. Correlation meeting was our time to schedule those visits and update the Ward Mission Leader as to what we had been up to the previous week and what was coming up.

(e) ZL stands for Zone Leader. These were the elders who were called to be over several districts of missionaries in a geographical area.

(f) Bapt. int. is short for baptismal interview. Once an investigator completed the six missionary discussions and was ready to be baptized as a member of the LDS Church, the Zone Leader who interview the candidate. If they successfully interviewed then the baptism would take place as scheduled. If there were unresolved concerns, or the Mission President needed to come and follow up with the investigator, that would be scheduled. The local bishop would not have jurisdiction over this interview as he would with members of the local congregation who are of age, but the Church designates the mission to oversee convert baptisms in terms of paperwork and so forth.

(g) 'gator - I am not sure why I was too lazy to write investigator. I cannot believe I wrote that. That's like calling San Francisco Frisco.

(h) Coffee is in reference to the LDS teaching of the Word of Wisdom (D&C Section 89) which forbids the use of alcohol, tobacco, and coffee (more/less). That should be free and clear for any candidate working towards a baptismal commitment and membership in the LDS Church.
