College Football Week 3; NFL Week 2

Was I right or was I right? USC totally crushed Ohio State. Not even close: 35-3. That's a nasty butt-whooping.

Not as nasty as BYU's 59-0 thrashing of the UCLA Bruins. Max Hall tossed 6 TDs in the first half; 7 overall. That's three Cougar victories over UCLA in a calendar year. Who's your Daddy?

Oklahoma continues to roll. Notre Dame is looking all right behind the Clausen kid. I wasn't sure he was going to be legit coming out of high school. Sure, his high school team was championship caliber, but it was a smaller school division. I thought it was just the last name. But no, Jimmy Clausen seems to be all right. We'll see how the Irish fare this weekend against Michigan State.

CAL laid an egg against Maryland. They made it interesting, but too little, too late. They have a much-needed bye week before facing Colorado State. That should get them back on track.

I'm looking forward to this weekend's Boise State / Oregon contest. That one really seems like a toss up if you ask me. Boise State isn't what they once were, but there is just something irregular about the match up and I think it favors the Broncos. I seriously cannot stand whoever is designing the uniforms for the Oregon Ducks. A bad case of ADHD. Pick a color scheme and go with it. Only if that color scheme does not always have to be some variety of a magnetic color.

I think the Mountain West might be among the most hotly contested conferences in the NCAA this year. Utah, Air Force, TCU, and BYU each have a chance to crash the BCS come this January. The Utes face the Falcons this Saturday.

Meanwhile, over in the NFL...

I was impressed at the Colts tenacity. After getting pounded by two NFC North teams, they were actually able to muster up the strength to come away with a victory. It was in dramatic fashion on the road against the Vikes and Adrian Peterson, but they did it. Thank goodness. I was beginning to wonder if every major star in the NFL over the past 3-4 seasons was going to leave injured.

How about the Dallas / Philadelphia game on Monday night? McNabb and Westbrook were superb, but Romo and T.O. stole the show. Now, if they can just get this kind of production in the postseason. I was most impressed when T.O. responded to Steve Young and Emmitt Smith's postgame Sportscenter segment by saying his goal for the team this year was merely to "make the playoffs and win a game." Thanks for the honesty. At least this year we won't hold our breath. Not to suggest in any way that I'm a Cowboy fan, but talk about underachieving!

The Broncos / Chargers game ended in ignominious fashion. It kind of makes one wonder when you see a blown call affect the outcome of a game like that. It hearkens me back to the "Tuck Rule" when Tom Brady was sacked by Charles Woodson and the Raiders recovered the fumble. Well, only to find out moments later that the referees ruled he was attempting to throw the ball and it was considered incomplete. Anybody sitting at home watching the game that snowy night in New England - even Patriots fans - knew the call was blown. So, I wonder what the fans in San Diego were thinking when they had victory snatched out of their grasp by the hands of defeat?

Both the Raiders and 49ers won road games on the same day. When was the last time THAT happened? The Niners at least have a shot at 2-1 with a home game against the lowly Lions this weekend. The Raiders meanwhile face a runaway 2-0 Buffalo Bills freight train, led by Marshawn Lynch. Advantage: Buffalo.

The Steelers continue to roll. The Panthers start off 2-0 without star receiver, Steve Smith. The Arizona Cardinals are 2-0 as well. Kurt Warner to Anquan Boldin looks as dangerous as any tandem in the league! Brett Favre dropped a tough home loss to Matt Cassell and the Pats. Ouch!

We'll see what happens this weekend!
