President Obama's Weekly Radio Address (Feb 7, 2009)

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Yesterday began with devastating news with our economic crisis but ended on a positive note. Another 600,000 jobs were lost in January and we've lost 3.6 million jobs since this recession began. But by the evening, Democratas and Republicans came together in the Senate and responded appropriately to the urgency that this situation demands.
  • The time for action is now. Our economic crisis could become a national catastrophe. We can't rely on a losing formula that relies only on tax cuts as the answer to all of our problems; the crushing cost of health care; or the state of our public schools. Americans don't expect political solutions, they expect American solutions.
  • Let's put Americans to work doing the work America needs done. It will save or create 3 million jobs this year. Almost all of them in the private sector; jobs that help us today and prosper tomorrow; jobs that modernize our health care system; connect every corner of the country to the information superhighway; and grow the economy tomorrow; jobs that rebuild our roads, levees, bridges, and dams.
  • It includes immediate tax relief for our struggling middle class. It protects health insurance and provides unemployment insurance. It helps our communities avoid tax hikes.
  • Americans across this country are struggling and are watching to see if we are equal to the task before us. Let's do whatever it takes to keep the promise of America alive in our time.
