HIGHLIGHTS:
- This week I spent time with people who have been hurting because of this economic crisis. They've been looking to those they sent to Washington for hope. This morning we delivered real and tangible progress for the American people. Congress has passed my economic recovery plan.
- It's an ambitious plan at a time when we badly need it. It will save or create 3.5 million job over the next two years and lay a new foundation for our lasting economic growth and prosperity. Because they did, I will sign this legislation into law shortly.
- The work of modernizing our healthcare system and upgraded libraries and labs in our children's schools. A smart grid necessary to transport clean energy. The work of repairing our crumbling roads and bridges. We'll provide unemployment benefits and healthcare people count on.
- Some fear people we won't be able to implement this plan. It's time to begin doing things differently. We will spend these precious dollars with unprecedented accountability, responsibility and transparency. Once the plan is put into action, a new website will allow any American to watch where the money goes and weigh in with comments and questions. It's your money and you deserve to know where it's going and how it's spent.
- The problems that led to this are deep and widespread and our response must be equal to the task. We need credit flowing to families. We need to stop unscrupulous speculators from undermining our economy. In the weeks ahead, I will submit a proposal for the federal budget to restore discipline that these challenging times demand.
- Our long term economic growth demands we dispense with things we don't need. This morning I'm reminded of words from JFK: "Pray for powers equal to your tasks." We will prove equal to this task. Working together we will turn this crisis into opportunity. After spending the week with the men and women of this country, I have never been more certain of that. Thank you.
